A sad and momentous occasion on this evening's Against The Arctic as I prepare to move the show from SUnday nights 8-10pm to the same timeslot on Tuesday nights. It's been an honour to present the show between Jonathan Alley's Under The Sun and Michael Kucyk's Noise In My Head, two programs which have opened my mind to many new strains of music. In celebration of the good times had on the Arctic / Noise crossover we decided to stage a three hour show with regular contributors to both shows throwing in tracks. From the Arctic side came Rambl and James Cecil, while Noise brought regulars Biscuit and Bell Towers. The result was a blinding three hours of dub, deep house, detroit, psychedelic soul, disco and krautrock. The first hour I presented with Rambl and James Cecil is available on its own as is each hour of the "Against The Head" collaborative show. While Tuesday nights will be a great home for the Arctic, it Just won't be the same. Thanks to Michael and Jonathan for all the good times over the last three odd years but especially Kucyk for sharing so much amazing music and enthusiasm.

2008 was another killer year of music on all fronts. Makes it difficult to choose what to play in two hours, especially being interested in so many styles as we do here on the Arctic. One thing I knew from early on was that there was going to be a lot of Australian music in the list this year with amazing releases from Qua, Canyons, Barrage, Kes Band, Fabulous Diamonds, The Drones, Mountains In The Sky, ii, Faux Pas and Inquiet. As I got to the end of the show I was staring at piles of cd's and records around me that I didn't get to play. If only I had 4 hours!
From overseas, music from Lorn, Harmonic 313, Flako, Mike Slott and Dorian Concept pushed dubstep and futuristic instrumental music into new and exciting territory for me. It's good to see more nights emerging in Melbourne with these sounds as the focus, I feel confident that 2009 will see some new underground nights starting up and the ones that have been around for a while like Upfront, Clinik, Heavy Innit and John Camo's dubstep nights start to get a stronger following.

Welcome to another cracking year of alternative christmas songs! When we began this process of digging into festive songs, I don't think either dad or I thought we would find so much amazing stuff. The most mesmerising songs for me come from American blues and gospel singers in the early parts of last century. But there is also some amazing calypso from the likes of Lord Nelson and it was great to include the Louis Prima this year as it was one from our 2007 list that we never got to.
Darlene Love's "White Christmas" from the Phil Spector Christmas record has become our unofficial theme, we have decided that we will open with it every year. Other highlights included Sufjan Stevens, the crowing rooster in Tom Waits' Chocolate Jesus, Vera Ward's amazing acapella, Coco Tea with some christmas dub, the Rev J.M Gates and of course our two amazing live performance from Ross McLennan and Kes, thanks to those two for giving up some time before Christmas to come and sing some songs.

shout out to hudson mohawke and mamiko motto, brought the heaviness to ms libertine on the weekend!
super digital start to the arctic this week after checking out some old dilla beats followed by some new madlib ones in tribute to the late great luminary. enjoying new beats from paul white, mark pritchard, mr scruff, the incredible zig zag from rustie and coco solid's nz mia style graffiti girls. After getting the grit out of my system straightened out with Trama's Straight Groove, a killer piece of disco from Kon & Amir's latest Off Track compilation. Followed with theo, some inside out acid and came home with qua and canyons.
things settled down after that with some turkish, brazilian and dub flavours and a snippet from the INCREDIBLE new Menahan Street Band album out on Dunham records.

Eleanor began the legendary Players Ball night which finished up at First Floor recently after nearly 4 years. Tom also plays bass in local hip hop outfit True Live and has played with Sista She on many occasions. Ross McLennan was the frontman of fantastic Melbourne band Snout and after they disbanded he made his first solo record Hits From The Brittle Building in 2003. Earlier this year came Sympathy For The New World. Still full of wonderful lyrical nuance and free flowing melodies, the record also took the filmic element hinted at in Hits From The Brittle Building and developed it with many of the songs running into four and five minutes, winding their way through different moods and emotions over their course. It's one of the best records i've heard this year and a beautiful record in its own right.

Towards the end of the show i did a mini Roy Ayers retrospective encompassing some of his solo work with ubiquity and also his productions for Sylvia Striplin and Ramp. The man himself is coming to town on the 23rd October playing at the Prince of Wales with Nostalgia 77 and local heroes The Bamboos.

Full house on ATA tonight with a little help from my friends. DJ Kuya and Soul Mirage were in to have a chat about the Gaslamp Killer show coming up at Ms Libertine's on Friday Oct 3rd, also playing some of their very fresh unreleased jams. Rambl also came along for the ride bringing some treats from Harmonic 313, V Vaughan the travelling vaudeville villain and Javaanse Jongens. Had a chat with Phil Ransom down the wire from NYC a few days ago. He split Melbourne a few months ago for a 6 month change of scenery. Leaving Melbourne with no records on his person, the mix he did especially for Against The Arctic was compiled entirely from records he bought since arriving in New York.
Ransom has been dj'ing for over 20 years, running the legendary night Purveyors at the Lounge, making music as Mnemonic Ascent, Crackpot and Inverto as well as a host of under the counter edits of rare disco, boogie and musical curios, often in tandem with Misha Hollenbach aka Perks.

against the arctic #130, 7th September 2008 with James Pianta (Votary Records)
Joining me for tonights show was James from Votary Records, the Aussie label that started in 2006 with a focus on rare, Australian music from the 60's and 70's. Their first reissue was the 'Inner Space' soundtrack by Sven Libaek whose music is going through a renaissance due in part to its feature as part of the soundtrack to Wes Anderson's film 'The Life Aquatic'. But long before that this was a highly collectible album trading for money around the world and Votary also aim to reissue Sven's other lost soundtracks.
Their most recent endeavour is a reissue of the Charlie Munro Quartet album 'Eastern Horizons'. Widely considered to be one Australia’s most adventurous and important modern Jazz recordings, Eastern Horizons was recorded in 1967, and incorporated eastern influenced scales and phrasing with free jazz. Not only a landmark of Australian jazz but it was also one of the first recordings to thoroughly explore the East meets West concept internationally, predating Alice Coltrane's exploration of similar diasporas. Against The Arctic # 94 :: Christmas Special 23rd December 2007
Well herein lies the first Against The Arctic christmas special!
During my final show before christmas 2006 I presented a haphazard christmas show with a smattering of christmas songs and a few others that seemed to vaguely fit the season. My dad heard this show and liked it and halfway through 2007 suggested that we present an all out christmas show together for the upcoming Festive season.
Towards the end of November we began our research in earnest and turned over a mountain of material, some amazing, some mind numbingly boring. Most artists have had a crack at a christmas song and not all have fared so well. But due to the sheer volume of attempts, there's some amazing stuff out there, and certainly wide enough in variety that the eclectic nature of the Arctic could be honoured while sticking to the festive theme.
We started off with (for us both) the most obvious reference point which was Phil Spector. Along with reggae music and a bit of opera, Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You is always on high rotation in December. It's a good album for any other time of year too. Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby had been stuck in my head all through the week leading up to the show so it seemed fitting that it should be second off the mark. After some christmas soul from the Staples and the O'Jays it was time to greet our guests, Lord and Lady Stoneking, who would shortly be singing their christmas song.
Calypso musicians weren't shy of embracing the christmas theme and so there was a lot of material to choose from. Lord Executor gave us Christmas Is A Happy Day and then the spooky Beefheart Song followed it up taking things down to the swamp.
CW and Kirsty were in fine voice. Their song "On A Christmas Day" which, coincidentally, had been penned for a Johnny Von Goes christmas special some years before was beautiful. CW insisted that his mouth trombone wasn't 100% but it sounded just fine to us.
We then went motor city with The Dirtbombs and The Bellrays and then cleaned it up with a mighty Kinks song. Keeping the tempo we checked out some Juice Crew christmas vibes with a head nodding Marley Marl beat and then the Waitresses kept us bouncing with Christmas Wrapping. Alton Ellis was the cut of choice from the extensive Trojan label xmas record with A Merry Merry Christmas.
After all that excitement we decided it was time to settle down with Tom Waits and his plaintive Christmas Card from A Hooker In Minneapolis. The reverend RM Gates gave us some down home gospel and then a vocal quintet gave us the building Holy Babe cycle.
Dad then read a John Donne poem called Nativity and we stayed on the gospel train with 'ole Buell Kazee and then an uplifting acapella rendition of Mozart's Joy To The World by the Blind Boys Of Alabama with the Aaron Neville. A couple of Canadians (Joni and Ron) brought that bracket home with pensive songs about christmas as a time for reconciliation and contemplation as opposed to the usual unbridled joy that permeates a lot of others.
Ross McLennan's offering from the Mistletone label's christmas album is a great song and then we heard the classic Bowie and Bing medley of Little Drummer Boy and Peace On Earth. Beck's oddball psychedelic take titled little Drum Machine Boy seemed like the right contemporary antidote to Bowie and Bing's hilarious banter at Bing's doorway.
Dad then sang his christmas song How To Make Gravy and we came home with Stevie Wonder's amazing version of the oft done Silver Bells, some swing with Celia Cruz and The Pogues and Kirsty Maccoll with Fairytale In New York.
After saying goodbye we finished the way we started with Spector's amazing I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.
After having such a good time I think we'll be back next year with a whole lot more christmas songs.

Nice to fly solo after a busy few weeks of guests and fill ins. Started off the show with Barrage's Xmas song from the great Mistletone records Christmas comp called Mistletonia which is RRR album of the week this week. I dug out some old detroit techno records and got lost in a swirl of them for about 45 minutes, winding things down a little with Moodymann's incredible I Feel Joy. Look out for the enigmatic Detroit producer playing his first Australian show at the Prince of Wales on Friday January 25th.
After nine o clock things got a little spooky with some cosmic fusion from Jon Hasssell and a gently mixed selection of soundtracks (morricone and lurie) and library music (cause for concern). Also heard a song from the new Welsh Rare Beat compilation compiled by ANdy Votel and Gruff Rhys (latter of Super Furry Animals).
The last bracket of the show was long and largely tropical with some brazilian sounds, congolese percussion and Ned COllette's confounding 'Christmas Song' from the Mistleotne compilation.
This sunday 23rd I'll be presenting a Christmas show with my dad, 2 hours of our favourite christmas songs with a little live performance from CW Stoneking and Pops. hope you can tune in. Richard Campbell joins me on the 30th for the final Arctic of the year.

against the arctic #92 Sunday 9th December 2007 w/ James Wilkinson aka POST
After many months of dancing about one another, James WIlkinson and I finally managed to make the Arctic thing happen. James came in and filled in both me and the RRR listenership as to his musical and theatrical pursuits of the last 15 years and talked about the creation of his solo album as Post which came out on preservation records in 2006.
James then laid down a killer 45 minute mix of MPB (roughly translated as Brazilian Popular Music) which had me glued to my trainspotter's chair in the RRR studios. Hopefully we'll see him back in 2008 when the second post album comes out.

Tim Shiel aka Faux Pas joined me in the studio tonight to have a chat about his new EP changes and an album that will hopefully see the light of day in about six months. I love tim's music and have played it on the show quite a lot so it was good to finally meet the man behind the beats. against the arctic #89, 18th Nov 2007 w/ Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene)
A few weeks ago I spoke to Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene about his new record Spirit If which has been recorded over the last two years in fits and starts and was never really intended to be an album as such. He spoke about how it was an open recording envoronment, an attempt to get back to just writing songs for the hell of it, a creative process in which he felt free and had space to "lie around in the songs". The record sounds as lush and big as any Broken Social Scene outing and it certainly has the trademark shimmer that you come to expect from their records but it seems like a much more personal record than the previous BSS albums.
They're a pretty fascinating collective of musicians with members either forming or being involved with other groups like Stars, Do Make Say Think, Apostle Of Hustle, Metric and solo artists like Feist, Jason Collett and Emily Haines. So i thought I'd do a little Broken Social Scene and related playlist to break up the interview and if you're wondering how New Buffalo makes the cut it's because she's released on the Arts & Crafts label and has recently been on tour with The Broken Socialists.
That took up til just after nine and then, naturally, it was time for some finnish disco from ratto ja lehtisalvo. Kenny Dixon jr aka Moodymann followed on from that and that really got the disco juice flowing so I had to play the amazing Danny Krivit re-edit of the Love Unlimited 's version of the Theme From King Kong. Look out for Moodymann at the Sydney Festival and hopefully in Melbourne around late January.

Melbourne is blessed in vintage spring time and I can't resist the lure of a predominantly electronic show tonight. Joining me in a couple of weeks will be James WIlkinson aka Post whose beautiful self titled album on Preservation has been a favourite since it came out in 2006. The song DLTD was third along in tonight's show and preceded a cloudy opening bracket of electronic hip hop, ambience and minimal techno grooves finishing up with the incredible Carl Craig remix of Cesario Evora's Angola which we heard the Pepe Bradock dub of last week.
Towards 9pm i got into some dubstep sounds and then mellowed right out with some gentle songs from Pompey, Nick Huggins and Machine Translations. I have officially declared to myself and anyone else who will listen that I will never tire of The Triffids 1986 album 'In The Pines' as I believe it to be a masterpiece of dusty Australiana. The Triffids will be reforming without the late David McComb for the upcoming sydney festival in January. Check their website for more details.
Been loving that new Sharon Jones 7" so much so I played it again this week before a couple of great new 45's from Gamm and DJ Spinna whose tipping his hat to some of that turkish ethno flavour in the hip hop beats of late. The Edwin Birdsong jam is also a confouding piece of psychedelic soul which needs to be heard to be believed.

Started off in Atlanta tonight with Hip Hop mavericks Outkast and a song from their classic album ATLiens. The Red Eyes went deep into dub territory after that but rhythm and sound went even deeper with the sweet burial mix pulse and the stone vocals of the tikiman before getting into some amazing old techno from the Kooky Scientist, an old classic from the Plus 8 vaults. Second bracket was all spacey until Kelley Stoltz's wonderful noise from the ESP compilation on Nervous Jerk and Archie Shepp brought it all home in a tasteful fashion with the silky bass playing of the one and only Ron Carter on a jam called Sophisticated Lady.
Harco Pront continued the mood with River and then a crackly song by Nina Simone stopped me in my mid show tracks to drink in the beauty of But Beautiful. I had to shake myself up with some african and reggae sounds; the former Wareika Hill, new from Jamaica, the latter, Tony Allen, incredible 70's material from the Fela Kuti bandleader, newly relevant because Vampi Soul have just re-issued his four albums from that time. Then there was some tropical vibes, turkish weirdness and bounce around beats from Oh No and his Oxnard Oxperiment album of beats.
Came home pretty noisy with Fly Lo, The Budos Band, Shazza and the nasty subsonics of Danny Breaks Baron Zen remix.

stiil twenty degrees at 8pm, definitely time for shorts and music that's going to make a hot night easier to deal with. Broken Social Scene Singer/Songwriter Kevin Drew was first up with a silvery piece of pop from his new record. Should be talking to the man himself in a week or two so stay tuned for that. J Walker aka Machine Translations has been VERY busy in the last little while and his new album is out as well as perth band the Bank Holidays who's opus he also produced at his South Gippsland studio. Lovely sounds.
Been enjoying some of the covers from the Do it again tribuite to Pet Sounds so we heard Centro-Matic's version of my fave 'Don't talk Put Your Head on My Shoulder' and then got into some mroe moody gear from the Stones, The Triffids, Pikelet and Broadcast, finishing up that bracket with one of my favourite love jams ever, Mr. Gaye's 'Come Live With Me Angel' from the Leon Ware produced and highly under rated 'I Want You' album.
Went into some weirder electronic territory after that checking out the Heliocentrics and the new Prefuse 73 record and finished off with some reggae, dancehall and a killer MIA track with Timbo on the beat.

Rambl is back in the RRR studios with some guests in tow tonight. Neil Stafford has just returned from Japan and he concurred with every other DJ that's ever been to that far flung island that the record shopping is nothing short of incredible. He found local mic iconoclast Bigfoot who also dropped in for the party and dropped some flow a little later in the piece over the EL Michels Affair.
Again we divided up the show into three brackets, me first with some fiery latin and Brazilian sounds finishing up with a new deep electro monster from Flying Lotus and some sweet dancehall from Choppa Chop.
Richard brought it home in the second bracket with some deep soul sounds and a furiously mixed 20 minute slab of future hip hop beats including an amazing new track by Nathan Yell (Aloe Blacc) with all the sounds ade from the human voice.
Neil opened up with the instrumental of the El Michels Affair track that Richard had played and local word wizard Bigfoot let loose on the RRR airwaves freestyling up a storm about the merits of RRR, singing pop songs with Nikki Webster and mishaps of the Wild Turkey variety. Mr. Stafford then slipped into some Brazilian techno, an incredible carl craig remix of Tony Allen and a great members only edit that sounded suspiciously like the black consciousness group The Black Poets. tasty.

a pretty dark, foggy flight path on the arctic tonight with lots of electronic sounds slipping across the RRR airwaves. Inspired in part by Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek's set at Miss Libertine on the saturday night, I went through a little mix up of some of their music both individually and together and then couldn't resist some darker techno, dubstep and broken beat jams to warm up a suddenly cold sunday night. Ricardo Villalobos' mix of Shackleton's blood on my hands is as good as anything he's ever done, vintage rolling dark techno.
Some months ago when J'Nett guested on the arctic she played an amazing piece of electro dub by kode 9 called sine of the dub with the incredibly deep vocals of the spaceape dribbling over the top of some nasty low-end-ness. It got it's second airing on the show tonight after an old mr. oizo favourite from a few years ago. Been diggin on the new prefuse 73, Francis Plagne and Heliocentrics in the world of new records.

Started off tonight's show with an exploration of the Coltrane lineage, First great aunt Alice with a song from her mind blowing album Universal Consciousness and then followed it up with an amazing jam from her great nephew Flying Lotus from his new ep on Warp records. Egon's label Now Again has just released the Heliocentrics record which is sounding pretty amazing, an exploration through the depths of drummer and bandleader Malcolm Catto's wide taste with the record touching on hip hop, psychedelica, jazz and electronics. After checking out Sun Ra, his sometime collaborator Eddie Gale and an operatic interlude from Janet Baker's sung rendition of the Dido & Aeneas tragedy, things took a turn for the gypsy with songs from Salah Ragab's 60's egyptian jazz reissue, ditties about Andes mountain dancing from Yma Sumac and some brazilian sounds from Forro In The Dark.
Second half of the show took in some soundtrack ambience, Jonathan Richman ranting, the new Akron Family and Kevin drew records and techno terrorists Black Dice.

Started off the show with an Old Galt McDermott record this week that was the sample source for an old Handsome Boy Modelling School track from their first album "So... How's Your Girl?". The HBMS song, "The Truth" featured Roisin Murphy of Moloko and was always one of my favourites from that record. Heard a nice local beat from Ivan 'Choi' Katchoyan, drummer from Cookin On 3 Burners to get the next set rolling and after hearing Neil Young's incredible Vampire Blues from On The Beach went on a slightly cosmic bent for a few songs, taking in Mr. McCartney from his confounding album "II" and some newer disco edits, including a particularly incredible version of Yoko Ono''s Walking On Thin Ice by Elvis Costello. Thanks to J'Nett for tipping me to that one.
Then it was more hip hop, new beats from Percee P and Phat Kat from their respective albums as well as some super digi-soul from the one and only Spacek and finishing up with the soon due in town Aloe Blacc and some electronic pop from Adem. Loving the new Caribou record and Nervois Jerk's ESP compilation from which the fantastic Kelley Stoltz track was taken.

Richard Campbell joined me for his monthly guest slot tonight and on the way we managed to convince Martin Langridge - possessor of the deepness - to join us for a RRR throwdown. Essentially the show is divided up into one long bracket each. Richard was first up beginning with Dilla, Martin second with Ahmad Jamahl and I brought it home kicking off with Kamal and the brotherhood.
in 2 hours we rock through dubstep, jazz, tropical brazil, reggae, pop, digi-bit-hop, afrobeat, detroit techno, funk and soul, the breaks between signposted by three boys talking jibberish at the end of a long weekend in the discos. Richard back in a month for more hilarity and fine beats.

Apart from 2 cheeky New Zealand offerings, all the music on tonight's show was full flavoured Australian. And of course there were so many things I didn't get to play that I would've liked to. Started off with a new disco-pop jam from Barrage who'll be launching that ep on SAturday September 22nd at Gertrudes. Then it was a couple of disco classics, one from Mr. J Dower and then another from our friends perkalucci and ranzulio over at the pulse family. Then a big dirty mess of Australian and Kiwi funk, greasy and raw, fresh from the stove, which moved into indigenous sounds from george barrawanga and the wilcannia mob who have turned up on the new MIZ record courtesy of a Morganics engineered collaboration.
Things wound down after that with beautiful tracks from Faux Pas, Nick Huggins, Qua and the new Pompey record out through Pocketclock. Mountains in the sky and Tim RIchmond brought home the gentle space only to have it disturbed by the Go Betweens with the incredible urgency of their song Palm Sunday and The Triffids with their 1981 single Stand Up released through a university label in Perth. Rounding it all off was a beautiful song from the new Francis Plagne record out through Mistletone and Synaesthesia.

Well, Radiothon is done for another year, another amazing effort with over 10,000 people pledging their support for the joys of independent, non playlisted media. Thanks to all those who subscribed.
This week on the show was a long overdue DJ mix from Melbourne's Matt Tudor as well as an interview with Eothen Alapatt aka Egon, general manager of Stones Throw records and overseer of their wonderful sub Label Now Again whose compilation Now Again Re:Sounds has just hit the shelves with contemporaries like Koushik, Truth & Soul, J Rocc and Edan re interpreting some of the tastiest beats from the vaults into new music. Around and under Egon's talking I tried to cover a diverse range of material from both labels, testament to the importance of this imprint for modern music.
After working at Gaslight and Raoul for many years, Matt Tudor went on to start the now defunkt Substrata.com.au which ran out of a small office in Johnson St Collingwood peddling incredible electronic sounds to the Australian online community for 5 years. Since winding up that operation, Matt has moved on to regular DJ'ing around town and more recently as a label manager for FUSE music distribution who oversee great labels like Daptone and Vampi Soul amongst many others.
Matt's mix took in deep jazz, hip hop, dub, world music and some glitchy sounds all delicately mixed for sunday night listening pleasure.

Joining me on the penultimate Arctic before radiothon were Sam and Royce from local label brother sister who's compilation A Fifty Gallon Drum Of Savage Customs, Fresh Flesh and Random Pop" has been a regular on the show for the past few months since it's release. A great collection of loose and experimental pop, the compilation is a great look at some of Melbourne's independent talent and those who they mix with around the globe. The launch is happening at Gertrudes on Thursday the 16th featuring Inquiet, Poland, Kharkov and ii.
After royce and sam, I got stuck in to a bracket with an amazing piece of David McComb spoken word from the Triffids Domino reissued Born Sandy Devotional. Finished off with some old sounds from RJD2 and a delicious new piece of reggae from Shinehead. The rest of the show was dark srums, african influences and some brazen latin sounds tempered by some soundtrack oddities towards the end. The Bumps album from Tortoise percussionists Bitney, Herndon and McEntire is pretty amazing.

against the arctic 8th july 2007 w/ Simon Caldwell
Simon Caldwell was my guest on the arctic tonight, the third in two weeks! Having had me on his 2-SER Show All Funked Up in Sydney many times, I have been trying to wheedle Simon into the studio the last few times he's been down to play. Simon's probably best renowned for his deep, detroit inspired sets of techno, house, disco and electro but is also a keen collector of jazz, funk, soul and reggae. After gorging himself on Pizza Meine Leibe he went deep into his library and came up with some ultra-spaced funk soul and jazz ditties full of samples and hooks that had us all pulling Howard Moon jazz faces in the studio right up til 10pm.
thanks to Tamas for his great mix last week, i went out and found out an $8.00 Shomu Yamashta record after hearing a track last week in his nice picks.
next week flying solo and then on the 22nd Rambl will be joining me for further meeting of musical minds.
