moodymann aka kenny dixon jr. :: don't be misledAn outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann (given name Kenneth Dixon Jr.) is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house music. While he may frustrate people with interview refusals and relentless reminders as to the origins of the genre he has contributed so extensively to, the soulfulness of his output can't be faulted. Utilizing soul and jazz samples (both classic and obscure), low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the dominant tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved iconic status thanks to songs like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases on his own cult label KDJ, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s. In 2007, Moodymann returned with the aptly named "technologystolemyvinyl", easily among his best releases. Home made jazz and funky house, changes of mood and rhythm right in the middle of song; it doesn't sound like the average release. The latest offering on his Mahogani imprint is from the raw and incredible Detroit garage rock and soul soul band The Dirtbombs, showing that he's not only interested in showcasing the electronic music of America's motor city. Moodymann plays his first ever Melbourne show at the Prince of Wales on Friday 25th January 2008, and with a strong local line up of J'Nett, Rambl and Neil Stafford performing, this is an one-off opportunity to catch Moodymann for what is his first, and may be his last ever Melbourne show.
