al stark

Al Stark is a Melbourne based artist whose practice is concerned with a diverse range of mediums including drawing, painting, installation, printmaking and three dimensional works. These mediums are often applied to found objects and the waste of disposable consumables. His images reference forms of traditional indigenous and folk art throughout the world.

Starks' work thematically revolves around social and political human interactions, and seeks to raise questions by offering poetic visual narratives that entice critique though beauty. The symbolism of fear, consumption, and gluttonous suicide sign post the work, forming folk epitaphs for the end of the modern world - like poetry of the abyss.

Al Stark has exhibited in numerous shows throughout Melbourne, in both institutions and public spaces. Recent works include a commission of a large cat mural for Tourism Australia in Degraves Lane, a group show at Until Never Gallery and various commissions. Stark was also part of the Red Bull Music Academy, giving the participants and crew a massive mural painting in the stairwell of the Richmond warehouse.

2007 should see Stark hit his straps, with a new set of etchings (completed during his studies at VCA) hitting a few of the galleries around town. We think he is on to something good, and hope you do too.
