rekid :: made in menorca
The alter-ego of Matthew Edwards aka Radio Slave, Rekid's first album delivers some of the freshest sounds in dance music that you will hear this year. Elements of house, disco, techno, electro, hip-hop, broken-beat and disco collide in a tour-de-force of synth pads and stabs, gritty basslines, chugging rhythms, futuristic breaks and hypnotic themes. Released on arguably the greatest contemporary music label Soul Jazz Records, this is one for fans of progressive (as in forward looking) dance music. |
j dilla :: the shining
What can be said about J Dilla that hasn't been said over and over again in recent months since his tragic death in February of this year? Possibly the greatest hip-hop producer ever to plug a pair of headphones into an MPC, Dilla has produced music for the likes of De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Common, D'Angelo and the Pharcyde as well as his own projects under J Dilla, his own group, Slum Village and the incredible collaboration with Madlib, Jaylib. Before his death he finished three albums of which this is the second. Whilst not attaining the incredible heights of the first of these (Donuts, released on Stones Throw earlier this year and which is my album of 2006) The Shining nonetheless delivers more wonderful J Dilla beats and features collaborations with Common, Busta Rhymes, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib and Guilty Simpson, and Black Thought from the Roots. A definite worthwhile investment for any fan of hip-hop. We eagerly await the third album, Jay Loves Japan due sometime soon. Watch this space for a feature on Dilla in the coming months. |
